HR Is Not There
to Help You

Noël I want to start with something that most people figure out too late — and by the time they figure it out, the record is already built.

HR is not there to help you. I know that's a difficult thing to hear. I know you've been told the opposite. But I spent thirty years on the inside, and I want you to understand what you're actually dealing with.

HR exists to protect the organization. Full stop. That is the function. That is the mandate. When someone from HR walks into a room and sits across from you — they are not a neutral party. They are representing the interests of the institution. And the sooner you understand that, the sooner you can actually protect yourself.

This doesn't make HR professionals bad people. Many of them are thoughtful, ethical, even genuinely conflicted about what they're asked to do. But the system is designed the way it's designed — and you operating under the assumption that HR is on your side is exactly the gap that gets used against you.
